On the beautiful island of Skopelos in the Greek Sporades slowly, slowly life is getting back to the cafes on the waterfront. The tables and chairs of the tavernas are getting their fresh paint, some of the potted plants are back on their place again to enjoy the first warm and sunny days. Not that is has been cold in the last months. Winter is not cold on the island, this year we had an average temperature of about 12 degrees Celsius, not too bad. But the streets are definitely less lively during the colder season.
Now the small souvenir shops in the narrow, cobbled streets of Skopelos town are getting refilled, the goods for the summer season getting arranged in the shop windows. Skopelos is one of the Top 10 vacation spots for weekend travelers from Athens and Thessaloniki, an island that hosts many Greek guests as well. Skopelos is the island of "Kalokairi" from "Mamma Mia The Movie", that came out in 2008. Some people come to trace the places from the great scenic scenes. The ones who saw the film will know what I mean. Everyone is excited to meet new people and hear new stories about the home cities and countries of the expected guests. Soon there will be some more boats connecting us with the island of Skiathos, the neighbor island that hosts the nearest airport. During the winter we also have daily connections, though. It is just about 1 hour to spend on the boats, a nice short trip.
Spring on Skopelos, the island with crystal clear waters in blue and green shades, with almond trees blooming in their pink and purple flowers, the Mulberry trees along the waterfront have been cut before the winter and now grow full leaves to get back in shape again, just wonderful. It sure is an exciting time for us. I am looking forward to this summer season on our island in the sun. A perfect day to sit on the waterfront, watching the fishermen selling their catch from their tiny boats. What a day!
