We all live crazy lives I know, and we're all busier than you could even imagine, but it's essential that you find constructive ways to relieve and vent your stress in a healthy way. As an ex-competitive swimmer who recently returned to the water, I can tell you with 100% confidence that swimming is one of the best ways to relieve the stress we naturally build up day to day.
I really took notice of this last week when I missed a few days out of the water because I was just busy and stressed out. I could've easily found time in my day to go workout, but I had simply talked myself out of it. I even brought all of my swimming gear with me on the road (I have a route sales job) for THREE days in a row, but I never went once.
Finally, I decided that I was going to go for a swim that fourth day no matter what happened, and let me tell you that was one of the best workouts I've had since I got back in the water. Its like I had an endless flow of energy, and it really felt great to get it all out. Once I finished up I just felt this huge sense of relief. My mind was CLEAR, my body felt great, and I was ready to handle anything that life threw at me without that burden of accumulated stress weighing me down.
So, if you currently swim or are trying to get in the habit, make sure you set a schedule or even just a frequency of how much you want to swim each week. Once you do that, make sure you never TALK yourself out of working out. If something comes up and you just can't make it, that's OK, but if you find yourself making excuses just stop and think about how good you'll feel after a good workout.
Really, the key to this is to use that stress as a motivation tool. You need a certain level of healthy stress in your life naturally, but too much can be just negative energy. Channel this energy in a constructive and healthy way and you'll never talk yourself out of another swim workout, and your workouts will be much more focused and productive.
