If you run a blog that is highly geared toward keeping your readers up-to-date on the latest in your niche, then you probably already know about Google News, Google's search-based news reporting program. Whenever a user types in a keyword that is related to a breaking story, then those stories will appear temporarily on the front page results for Google's popular search engine. Unfortunately, while this is a fantastic feature for consumers, it can be difficult to land on the first page for publishers... if you don't have the right strategy.
Develop a Highly-Focused Blog
When it comes to ranking well in Google News, it's all about authority. If you run a website that is based around gardening, and you do a blog post on the latest video game release, then you are more than likely going to rank really poorly in Google's news algorithm. Why is this the case? This is the case because you do not have very many sites linking to you on the keyword you are using in your news post, as your site likely has no other content to speak of surrounding the topic.
If this is starting to sound like Google News is weighted heavily by SERP, that's because it basically is. If you run a site on a specific football video game, and pretty much all you do is report on the little niche factors of that game, then chances are your site has a lot more quality and diverse backlinks in regards to the keywords associated with that game than competing sites. A site that covers exclusively the upcoming NBA Elite 11 video game, for example, will likely rank a lot better for that keyword in Google News than other more prestigious sites that are focused on the broader topic of sports video games. While the latter blog may generate more traffic, Google is certain to consider the more highly-focused site to be of greater authority on that keyword.
Deliver an Exact Match
When it comes to being recognized as an authority in search engines, there is really no better strategy than to have an exact match for the keyword a given user is searching. In many cases an exact match can propel a site above even the most prestigious of competition, simply because of the pure relevancy of their content.
Whenever you create a story with the intention of ranking well in Google News, take a good amount of time to come up with a title that will likely be an exact match for searches. This takes a bit of knowledge of how users search the internet, and knowing your niche helps too, but generally this is a very easy task to accomplish. If there is a new patch for a video game coming out for the fictional game "EzineWorld," then the most popular search term will likely be "EzineWorld Patch." Be sure to use this phrase exactly somewhere in your title, in the first sentence of your story and preferably one to two more times within the content (generally once in the body, and once at the end).
You can even prepare yourself to have an advantage once the fictional patch arrives, by doing stories such as "EzineWorld Patch Coming Soon" and "New EzineWorld Patch Details." This way, by the time the keyword phrase becomes popular, you will already have the authority to dominate the rankings in Google News. If you understand why this works, then you will quickly realize the potential of this technique across the many different niches.
