When your monitor starts to go it is a very sad time. The monitor is one of the few parts of the computer that can't be fixed, it must be replaced. You know your monitor's days are numbered when it starts sending weird lines down the screen, or losing its color or it may just blank out all at once, you never know what could happen, but no matter what the case is, you're going to need to buy a whole new monitor. Before running out to the store there are a couple things you can try beforehand. First of all make sure that the monitor is plugged in securely, and if you're using a power strip make sure that it's turned on. If that didn't work try giving the video cable plug connection a good wiggle and see if there's any luck. Still nothing? Try pushing hard on the video cord in the back of the computer and the back of the monitor to make sure that it's securely plugged in. If none of these work I'd say it's time to grab your wallet and head over to the store.
When you buy a monitor you want to make sure it's compatible with your computer. There are various video ports so you want to make sure that your computer has the right kind to fit into the back of the monitor. There is the common analog VGA port, which stands for video graphics array. These are the most common kind and look like wide thin ports with pins inside, that have places on each side where you can insert thumb screws, these kinds of ports sadly have the lowest resolution. Then there is the Digital DVI port which is usually in more expensive computers, DVI stands for digital video interface. Most Digital monitors come with VGA ports as well so you can pick whichever one you want, but the DVI port will give you much better quality. Then finally if you have a newer computer you may have the option of using an HDMI cable to hook your computer up to an HDTV, these cables have the same quality as DVI cables. Now say you got the wrong type of monitor and it can't hook up to you computer because one has a VGA port and the other has a DVI port. There's no need to fear, such cords that can make the connection do exist, not only that but you can get them for fewer than 10 dollars on Amazon.
