With the winter break fast approaching, it s time to plan for the new year. That means clearing out clutter from classrooms and finding new ways to stay organized and tidy. Papers from the first half of the year are likely piled high, art projects are overflowing from bins, and floors and walls need a good scrubbing from almost five months of little hands and feet getting into everything. Luckily, there are plenty of easy and cost efficient ways to organize, clean, and liven up your classroom; without spending your entire Christmas break doing it.
The school maintenance person may clean the classrooms to a certain extent, but you may still need to get in and do the serious scrubbing. This is especially true if you work for a small school without a daily cleaning person, or at a daycare center where you may be responsible for cleaning certain things yourself. The most important things to tackle or items that children touch most frequently.
Clean all toys using a diluted bleach solution, and put stuffed animals in the washer (Check labels before putting them in the dryer). You may also consider scrubbing down any dirty areas on walls and floors, and cleaning any classroom rugs. If rugs become too dingy or stained, however, you may be better off buying a replacement. Since children sit on them regularly, it’s important they stay clean and relatively germ free.
Clear out all paperwork and other items that your students no longer need, as well as those you don t need. If you haven t used it in several school years, you can probably safely throw it out. For things you just can t seem to part with, buy new shelving units that are spacious enough to hold everything without appearing too cluttered.
Take down any wall hangings or decor that are torn, dog eared, or otherwise in bad shape. Replace them with new hangings, pictures, or colorful paint free murals that you can apply quickly.
It s also a good idea to take stock on all your overhead storage units. Cubbies and shelves should be sturdy and spacious to prevent injury and to keep your classroom overall style and function. If your units are worn out or too small, you may be asking for trouble. There are many newer units that are colorful, compact, and tip resistant or that can be mounted securely to prevent them from buckling under pressure.
You can also liven up a drab classroom by adding smaller rugs that feature fun graphics throughout the room, along with colorful table and chair sets, art supplies, and toys. Be sure that all playthings are in good condition to prevent choking hazards or other injuries.
When your kids come back from the break, they ll feel new energy and hopefully be ready to learn. Educators have a very tough job but with the right tools and a great attitude, they might be teaching the next president of the United States or a Bill Gates in the making.
