Finding traffic on the internet is a bit like searching for gold -- there's misleading tips, tips that only work for some people and then there's fool's traffic which looks like real traffic, but is worth less than the mismatched socks underneath your bed. If quality traffic is as difficult to direct to your site as it is to make a site in the first place, then perhaps you need a change in strategy.
Instead of simply focusing on attracting quality traffic to your site, why not put some effort into turning your current traffic into gold? And by gold, we mean quality, sticky readers that aren't afraid to explore your site. So much focus is put into finding new streams of visitors, and not enough these days is put into upgrading what those sites already have.
Give Them What They Want -- The easiest way to improve the quality of your traffic, is to give your readers what they want. Quality begets quality in the fast-paced world of the internet highway, so when a reader stops by your site and feels genuinely informed and helped by your content, they'll be much more likely to see what else you have to offer in your digital well of knowledge. The moment you begin producing content without your reader's interest in mind, is the moment you've invited traffic from the wrong side of the street.
Reward Them For Visiting You -- Perhaps the most overlooked tactic any good website can perform to upgrade the core of its visitors, is to make them feel rewarded when they stop by, for no other reason than for stopping by. Take for example a video gaming blog that might discuss all the latest tips, news and happenings in the world of football video games. When a visitor stops by, how nice of a surprise might it be for them to read that they've been given a free video guide just for visiting? This is a great way to entice readers to stick around, and can be automated in every post with a simple text addition at the end of your singlepost.php file for WordPress blogs, or the equivalent post-content template.
If you have a product-based site, this is also an excellent and non-intrusive way to bring users through your "squeeze" page. Put a link to their free gift on your call-to-action page, and let them know that if they like it, there's more waiting for them when they sign up, buy this or refer that. The user gets their free gift, you get an easy excuse to market your squeeze page and the quality of your traffic slowly turns from useless, to useful. Maybe that Recycle Bin on your desktop has had the right idea all along?
