It needed to be replaced. The garage door had seen the best of its times and its heyday for the most part was over. When my folks bought the house almost twenty years ago, the garage door seemed immaculate and was for its time, a remnant of the days when these garage doors were made of wood. It had a heavy feel to it and was sturdy. Talking to my brother about it, we decided to go and look and compare garage door prices over the weekend. We had lived in that house for most of our pre teens and teen years.
The garage was the center of outdoor activity for us. We would close the garage door and often times use it like a tennis backboard. Through the years, there were familiar dinks and dents which most of us caused. Falling from bicycles, crashing the skateboard, playing soccer with the garage door as a make shift goal area, these and other incidents often times resulted in a huge talk down from my dad and every other year, we had the family task of repainting the garage door. When my brother and sister and I went to college, we all went to separate areas. My brother was accepted in an interesting East Coast University, the oldest in the country if I am not mistaken. I went to a west coast college which was set up because the same university my brother went to snubbed its founder when he wanted to donate land for that university then. My sister went east as well, and settled for one of the few Ivy League universities that had no ivy at all. Because of such educational expenses, my parents never moved to a bigger house but instead invested their money on us.
By changing the garage door, my brother thought it was a small help on our part since we mostly caused its battered up look. Checking garage door prices, the range went from around 500 to 1000 dollars plus an additional 100 dollars to install. We were seriously getting an aluminum garage door so it wouldn’t be burdensome for my father to lift the garage door himself. Then again, maybe we could redo the whole garage door system and make it automated and such.
Since it was a surprise to my folks, we never bothered to tell them and we figured in two weeks time, when my folks would go and visit my sister and her family, we could do the change. When we got back to our folk’s place, we noticed that the garage door had been stripped of its paint. Dad had started removing the paint while we were away checking garage door prices and had taken most of the paint off. When we looked at the garage door bare, we began to see those little dents and bumps, and began to identify who caused which. It brought back good memories of our childhood. Just then, Dad came out and asked us to help him remove the remaining strips of paint. As we did, he began telling to us which bump and dent belong to whom. In the hour or so of stripping, we had so much time talking and remembering about all the things that happened, good and bad. It was a great moment to my mind to have. We never got the new garage door and instead bought our folks a paid vacation in the Caribbean. Some things are just too priceless to change.
