Your first order of business is to get used to balancing on the board. In my opinion the best way to do this is to find yourself a nice gentle slope to ride down, just put your feet on the bolts however you're comfortable, if you put your right foot forward that's called standing goofy and if you keep your left foot forward that's called being regular. Then you just keep your body weight centered over the board while you ride down the hill, if you start going too fast and you need to jump off you can feel free to, just try to get further and further down the hill until you conquer it and can find new hills to defeat.
Once you're comfortable standing on the board your next order of business is to learn how to push. To do this you want to turn your front foot diagonally forward, then you take your back foot off of the board, during this motion you should have all of your weight over your front foot, then you place your back foot on the ground next to your skateboard, the further forward you place it the harder it will be to balance but the more force you should be able to get out of the push, then you want to force your front foot and the skateboard forward while still keeping your center of gravity over your front foot, if done correctly you should be able to continuously repeat this motion until you have some speed then you can put your back foot back onto the skateboard.
Now the previous paragraph may be a little confusing if you feel most comfortable then you push with your front foot and keep your back foot on the board at all times. This is called pushing mongo and is pretty common. The problem is that if later down the road you wanted to do some tricks over and down things, pushing like this will cause you to take a longer amount of time to set up, so now you have two choices, one to nip it in the bud and learn to push with your back foot, or you can just learn to skate to the best of your ability as is.
Now the final frontier to the basics of skateboarding is to learn how to kick turn. A kick turn is when put your back foot on the tail and put enough weight on your back foot to lift the front wheels off the ground and then you pivot then behind you which is front side or in front of you which is backside. To do this you want to start off by rotating your shoulders in whatever direction you want to kick turn in. To get really comfortable with kick turns you can practice something called a tick-tack which is where you kick turn back and forth which you will find actually generates momentum. Once you master all of these techniques riding around on a skateboard should become second nature to you.
