To install a new keyboard first you need to purchase a new keyboard with the proper connector to fit the port in your computer. A USB keyboard should work on all computers, unless all of the USB slots are taken, then you may want a PS/2 connector, but PS/2 connectors won't work on laptops, but when it comes to installing a keyboard there are very few reasons why you would want to install one on a laptop.
To begin the installation of your new keyboard first things first you're going to want to save and close any programs you have running if you're installing a USB keyboard. But if you're installing a PS/2 keyboard you're going to want to shut your computer down. Now you want to figure out whether your new keyboard uses a USB or PS/2 connector, USB connectors are rectangular; PS/2 connectors are round with prongs inside.
Once you have that all figured out you're going to want to get behind your computer and find out where it plugs in there are usually quite a few USB ports in the back of a computer so they shouldn't be too hard to find, once you've found an open one you're going to want to plug it in there, if it doesn't fit, this means you have to turn it over. The PS/2 ports are slightly more complicated, there should be two ports that it should be able to fit into, one is for the keyboard one is for the mouse, in most cases they're labeled, but sometimes they're not, if this is the case it's just a bit of trial and error before your keyboard is plugged in to its proper port, these are also a bit more challenging to get to fit in correctly especially if you can't see well, just keep twisting and pushing until the connector slides in to the port. In most cases your keyboard should be good to go, if not you may have to run an install disk that came with your keyboard. After your keyboard is installed if you want to go above and beyond you can make your way over to control panel in the start menu, then find keyboard options and go to properties, if you're running windows XP it'll be under printers and other hardware. From here you can adjust things like they key repeat rate, and how long after holding the key down before it starts repeating. Depending on what kind of keyboard you get there may be other options as well, but for the most part this is it.
