The GBC Shredmaster SC030 is a wastebasket shredder that is designed for light, intermittent use. Here we will take a look at the SC030 and give you what we consider to be its strengths and weaknesses.
Strengths:
1. You can adjust the SC030 fit on just about any wastebasket you have in the office. This is very handy, as you can either have a receptacle for dedicated use, or you can simply place the shredder on your wastebasket whenever you choose. The adjusting arm enables the SC30 to fit receptacles as small as eleven inches or as large as fourteen and a half inches across.
2. The SC030 is able to shred up to six pages at a time, which is not a bad capacity for such a small unit. In our testing, we found that this shredder easily handled staples and paperclips as well. The blades are fairly heavy duty steel, and should hold up to the light to moderate use for which this machine is intended.
3. We appreciated the feature which turns on the shredder automatically when you insert paper into the feed. There are also settings for manual operation and a reverse setting to help with paper jams.
Weaknesses:
1. This is a machine that is meant for small volume and fairly occasional use. It would be best suited for a home or small office, perhaps placed next to a desk. If you attempt to use the SC030 for more than about two minutes at a time, you will likely find that the mechanism will turn itself off and will need up to a half hour to cool down before it is ready to be used again.
2. We were a little bit disappointed by the fact that the SC030 only has a feed opening that is eight and three quarter inches across. While this is all right for feeding letter sized papers, any larger sized documents will have to be folded or cut before they can be fed into the shredder. This can slow the process down considerably, and can greatly reduce productivity.
3. The SC030 is a strip cut shredder, and it should be noted that this type of shredding offers the lowest security that is available on the market. If you are going to be shredding documents that are of a secure and confidential nature, you will almost certainly want to look into purchasing a cross cut shredder, as the security level of these types of shredders is much higher. On a more practical level, the strip cut fills wastebaskets much faster than a cross cut model would, so there is that aspect to consider as well.
Recommendation:
This shredder is a nice, economical solution for users who want a shredder next to their desk and will only be shredding a few pages at a time. It should be noted that this machine is not rated for any sort of continuous use, and overuse will cause the SC030 to overheat in a relatively short time. Overall, however, the SC030 is a reliable machine, and comes with a warranty of two years for the motor and five years for the cutting heads.
