Many parents assume that they do not need to do anything to keep their baby's skin clean and healthy. These parents seem to think that a baby just naturally fights off skin conditions and acne. After all, babies haven't hit puberty yet so they must not have to worry about puberty-related skin conditions. The simple truth is that skin care should start from day one.

This is the main reason that caring for your baby's skin is so important and it is important to put together a skin care routine eary on. The earlier on in life you begin caring for your baby's skin (and teaching the baby the importance of skin care) the more prepared that baby will be when he starts to face acne and other skin issues. Read on to find tips and tricks for putting together a proper baby skin care routine.

Daily baths are not required for newborns and very young infants. Most of the time young infants and newborns stay pretty clean. This is because they are mostly immobile and depend on their parents to get them from point A to point B. This makes it simple for parents to make sure that their babies don't get dirty or do damage to their skin. When your baby is still a newborn, you only need to bathe your baby a couple of times a week as long as you keep his or her face clean. Once the baby can get around on her own, however, it is important to bathe her more often.

When shopping for baby-specific skin care products, make sure you check the ingredients on the label carefully. You shouldn't buy products that contain added fragrances, dyes, parabens or phthalates. You avoid these things because they have all been known to contribute to infant skin conditions. After all, the last thing you want to do is accidentally cause a skin condition to develop after taking so much care to keep your baby's skin clean. Gentle skin care products are the best skin care products. If you aren't sure which products are best, ask your pediatrician for some hints before your next shopping trip.

A newborn's skin is far too sensitive to light to be taken outdoors into direct sunlight--even if you do everything you can to protect your baby's skin with sunblock. Once your child is six months old you will want to begin using an incredibly strong and baby friendly sunblock to protect them when you take them outside.

Two extra precautions that you should take to protect your baby against sun damage are hats and using umbrellas for shade. If your baby does get a sunburn help him feel better by applying a cool damp cloth for between ten and fifteen minutes two or three times a day. When you first bring your baby home, practicing proper baby skin care can seem overwhelming. It will be tempting to go overboard with baths and cleaning. Taking care of your skin, whether or not you want to believe this, does not have to be difficult. You will eventually realize that baby skin care, at its heart is based on common sense and all you need to do is keep him (or her) away from irritants and out of the dirt! Don't stress out too much--you'll get the hang of it eventually!
