There are a number of reasons why your child might be struggling in school. Regardless of whether your child's grades have fallen recently or if they have been a long term problem, there are a few things you can do. It's perfectly fine to be concerned, however most children do go through some rough patches in terms of academics. You can try and get your child back on track by taking an active role in helping them by using some tips in this article.

The biggest distractions to your children are the TV and the internet. Both of these, in particular the internet, can at times be helpful for studying. They both really are very time wasting though. Every hour your child is watching TV or chatting with friends online is an hour he or she isn't studying or doing homework. One important rule you should be strict with is no television or internet during study times. Your children may tell you that they are able to "multitask", meaning they can do their studying and watch the TV at the same time - don't believe them. The same holds true for other distractions as well, such as talking on the phone or texting. Time for homework and studying should only be used for doing these things.

Lots of children's reading skills are not as good as they could be, which is why many have problems in school. If you believe that your child has a deeper problem, like a learning disability, you should get them some professional help. Motivation is usually the issue here though. Finding out what topics excite your child and getting them to read about them is a wonderful way of getting them more motivated. You can use all kinds of books, like sports books, comic books or even novels. If you can instill a love for reading in your child, it will be much easier for them to concentrate even on material their not quite as excited about.

You should give your child rewards if they're able to improve in a subject to ensure their motivation doesn't drop. To you an improved grade might be considered as a reward, however to a child this might not be the same. You should create your own rewards system, and it can either be simple or complex, it's up to you. You can even make it into a game, whereby your child gets a set number of points for each grade they pass. The points can then be exchanged for a reward, like some sweets, a day out or cinema tickets. You can use your imagination, depending on what the child responds to, but this can be a powerful way to improve motivation.

Helping your child to well at school involves many different things, as we've gathered from this article. Each child will have their own reasons for needing help. Watching too much TV, not sleeping enough and bad study habits could all be reasons. The first thing you need to do is see what the problem could be.

Then you simply need to come up with some sort of plan to implement the changes.
