The wide range of stainless steel uses have increased through time. Ever since its invention, more and more industries in the world now depend on its marvelous function. You can look around you and you will see just how common stainless steel is.

The construction industry has long been dependent on carbon steel. Despite its corrosiveness, this is still being used. In the 19th century, some metallurgists from Europe discovered that incorporating chromium to carbon steel will render the metal less corrosive. Unfortunately, this discovery never became useful.

In the 20th century Americans discovered a formula that allows chromium to be combined with steel, it was called “stainless steel”. It contains 11 chromium and because of this, it has become so much more resistant to staining and rusting. However, it should be noted that stainless steel can be completely free from rust. It can still rust but you can keep it rust free by keeping it clean. This type of steel though is strong enough to survive through adverse weather conditions and chemicals. When cleaning it, only soap and soft cloth should be used since abrasive materials or brushes may damage its surface.

Since its dawn, stainless steel uses have really expanded. In the beginning, it was only used for cutlery but soon enough it was incorporated in architecture. It can also be found in wrist watches, skate blades, monuments, and tall buildings. In the 1930’s New York’s Chrysler building had its roof cover with mild steel sheet. When the parts of the building which are made of steel were examined, this strengthens the proof that steel is really resistant to corrosion for there was no reduced thickness found in any part. There were no corroded parts either. On the other hand, the Gateway Arch in St Louis was reinforced with stainless steel. It is considered as the biggest monument made by man in the United States. It is covered with stainless steel from top to bottom. It is 603 feet tall but all the maintenance that it has ever since is plain cleaning.

Apart from architecture, stainless steel also found its place in commercial kitchens, medical instruments, household appliances, lighting fixtures, backyard grills, restaurant furniture, and sometimes in jewelry. There are various kitchen wares which are made up of stainless steel because of its durability. Even manufacturers and factories also use stainless steel for the same reason. It is especially required in high risk jobs which need metals that have resistance against corrosion and will not break easily during usage. With altering levels of chromium, there are now different types of mild steel sheet in the market. Its chameleon property has made it very popular for use because it is not easily noticed even though much of the things that people do everyday are dependent on it. There are also hardware materials which are made out of stainless steel such as bolts, nuts, screws, and chain. Due to the properties of steel, many people and industries have benefited much from it.
