Through looking at various sites I found that there are thousands of these games out there to play, many of which are free to play, a lot of them have members' areas that cost money, or in game items that you can buy with real money, but in most cases you can enjoy a lot of the game for free. This means that if you are looking for something to kill the time there are tons of games out there for you to try, but if you want to get serious with a game it's probably going to cost you a little bit.
What I learned in testing out a large quantity of these games is that almost all of them take a large amount of dedication to them in order to become successful, While most of the games had something about them that made them unique, really overall they were all very similar. The vast majority of these games were set in a world with monsters, swords, shields, armor, magic, and often times the ability to equip a bow and arrow. The only real difference was a usual minor original switch in game play or theme, and oftentimes even that was nonexistent. The problem is that with this change in game play often comes with a drastic drop in the other qualities in the game such as graphics. This is of course because very few people play these games, so the creators don't really have the money to make a high quality game.
Overall I found that I got the most enjoyment out of playing well known games such as Runescape. Personally seeing as most of the games charge a fee of some kind, I find that if you're going to play an MMORPG, and you're going to pay for it you may as well really just dedicate your time and money to a well known game that it's obvious that a lot of people enjoy, this is unless you really want to rank on a high score list of some kind. If you're going to pay monthly I would suggest playing games such as Runescape, or World of Warcraft, or if a one time purchase is more of your cup of tea I would suggest buying a game like Diablo 2.
