The question that many people starting out in the internet marketing world eventually ask themselves after they have built their all sing all dancing website that has everything anyone could possibly want to sell is "How do I get on the first page of Google", ha ha, the simple answer to that is, very difficult if you have many products to sell and expect overnight first page of Google results.
I have always believed in the concept of slowly slowly catchy money, this basically means take one thing at a time, this means you have to pick a product, you then have do do your proper keyword research (don't go for the highest search term Google adwords gives you, unless you have loads of time and patience you will never succeed), you then have to do your onsite website optimisation which should include H1 tags, keyword density, alt tags, image descriptions just to mention a few.
Next you have your off site optimisation, which is the part where it all matters, now I am a firm believer of old school tactics, these do not include buying links from link farms, getting 10,000+ profile links, spamming wordpress blogs or any other rubbish that will at best bump your site up a few places then drop you outta site.
Old school means just that, do what Google likes and you will get there and stay there, if you have a product, be it digital download or physical, do your keyword research, if you can't get a EMD (exact match domain) find something very similar, maybe with a hypen separating the words, try to get a TLD (top level domain) either a com, net or org, these go along way in ranking before you even start anything else.
You should have a Wordpress blog as a website as this is something that Google love, their spiders crawl these sites like a flea on a tramp, your Wordpress site need not be your sales site, more of a taste of what your customer will get, don't swamp them with too much information, give them enough to make them want to click to your main site, if you can, give them something for free for their E-mail address (very useful for later offers you might have).
Article marketing is one of the best and truly tested ways of anserwing the question, How do I get on the first page of Google, if you use an automated submitter even better ( this is one of the only tools to SEO I agree with) because, if used correctly it will work wonders.
The other offsite link building strategies I would recommend are forum linking, this basically means find forums that are relevant to your niche, register with them (they will ask you for a signature which is basically a link to your webiste (you can use keywords)), read post and comment on those posts, this will leave a link back to your website (Wordpress, if you have been listening), these links again stay around forever.
There are many other old school tactics that do not involve Blackhat, or Greyhat , these will eventually get you banned from evrywhere, trust me I know.
