Each morning as I drive to work I flick the radio on and am drawn into listening to music that DJ's inform me is 'the next big thing' or 'the best thing out this year 'and yet most of the time I'm hearing one track that follows a music that sounded just about the identical because the last. So the place has the musicianship gone in at this time's music business?
One band that appears to stand apart from the rest is Muse. UK born and bred the band had lowly beginnings and played the pub circuit, evolving their sound and developing what they might become. The result was a rock band that experiment with sound and allow the listener to be fully swept up in the music they produce.
Maybe this is down to lead singer and electrical guitarist, Matt Bellamy's classical music training. It appears that many artists these days don't have a history steeped in music, many can't play instruments and even more now hope to hit the big time through exhibits such as The Xfactor, rather than putting the hard work in to learn their trade first.
After all it would be unfair to put all artists into the identical boat as there have been some wonderful bands and artists in current years. No one might fault the rise of Adele who has been singing because the age of 4, went to varsity to study her artwork and actually had ambitions of launching other peoples careers before being found after creating an ep and posting it on Myspace. Even someone like Avril Lavigne has some musical talent. She started singing at the age of 2 in church and went from there to writing songs, acting on stage at 15 with Shania Twain and then getting signed.
So what makes a very good band or artist? I think much of it depends upon where they came from, the musical background however then this comes to nothing if the corporate labels get hold of them, take away the creativity and make them into what they want them to be. So many good artists have been stung by the labels that can often chew artists up and spit them out before they actually have a chance. Artists have to know that they can be who they need to be, not what they're advised to be to earn money for somebody else. The problem is they can not do that with out the public's help. The problem with that's being able to get the exposure for the public to be able to see them. It's a hard industry on the market!
So let's hope this year brings out some new talent, real talent which is nurtured and inspired by labels that sign them and backed by the general public.
