When my husband got laid off work last year, we received a substantial severance package. In over twenty years of marriage we had never gone on an exotic vacation and decided it was time. To our surprise travel is extremely reasonable right now and there has never been a better time to go. As we began researching locations, I heard for the first time the incredible myth of the island of Maui in Hawaii and of the remarkable Maui Bed and Breakfast Inns. The island is composed of two volcanos which from above look like the head and body of the Demi-god for whom the island is named. It is said that Maui made a lasso of his wife's hair and slowed the sun in its path so that he might enjoy more hours of daylight on its beautiful beaches.
Hawaii's second largest island, Maui isn't second in everything. As a matter of fact, it has the largest dormant volcano in the world. Haleakala National Park allows visitors to climb to the summit where one can see five of the eight major islands of Hawaii. From December to May humpback whales surround Maui which is also home to the Whale Discovery Center at the Maui Ocean center. At Wainapanapa State park there are other natural beauties to see like the vast black beaches and sea arches caused by ancient volcanic activity. There are also caves to explore during your travels there. (And, of course, it has the Maui Bed and Breakfast Inns that I'll tell you more about soon.)
I was enchanted and wanted to go. As I began to research the hotels on the island of Maui, there were many to choose from. Most had internet access, were wheelchair accessible and had high user ratings, but they didn't reflect the character of the island. Then I began to look at Maui bed and breakfast inns and was immediately charmed.
Unlike the hotels, these Maui BnB's give personal service and introduce you to the people of the island, the point of world travel. Many Maui Bed and Breakfast Inns serve gourmet breakfast with rooms that reflect the culture of Hawaii and Maui in particular. Rooms are usually larger and more homey, while enjoying many of the same amenities like internet and wheelchair access. Rates for Maui bed and breakfast inns are often the same or better than for hotels of equal rating.
Before choosing your specific Maui B and B, it is a good idea to check the avg user rating to ensure a wonderful stay. I wish I had done this on my trip. Instead, I was stuck travelling with a group of people I didn't necessarily like because I bought a packaged tour. My room was small and uninteresting even though the hotel had a three star rating, and I was forced to travel places at the tour guide's pleasure rather than my own. I wish I had stayed in a Maui Bed and Breakfast Inn.
Most of the finer Maui Bed and Breakfast inns provide package deals with cars and will assist you in planning your travel experience. The owners are welcoming and helpful, and best of all you can travel all over the island of Maui on your own terms. Although with how beautiful the Maui beaches are, you may simply want to lounge on the beach surrounded by sand, listening to the lapping waves and enjoying the extended sunshine that Maui provides.
