Moving to a new home is an activity performed by millions of people each year. Packing and storing your belongings for the big moving day can seem like an overwhelming task. However, there are a number of easy things one can do when packing that will make the task easier and quicker.

The following is a list of tips for packing and storing your items for your moving day:

1. Make a Packing List and Gather Packing Supplies: It is important to make a list of all of the items that you will be moving. You can divide them into categories such as kitchen items, bedroom items, living room items…etc. This will ensure that you do not forget anything and keep your belongings organized. It is important that you have enough packing boxes, bubble wrap for protecting fragile items, packing tape, and labels, so that you can identify what is in each box and bag.

2. Big and Awkward Furniture: Mattresses, couches, tables, chairs, dressers, and desks, need to be properly packed in order to avoid damage and moisture and mildew contamination. Use plastic shrink wrap to cover the mattresses. The box spring should have protective padding added such as bubble wrap to protect it from damage during the move. Take care to insulate the corners to protect other items and walls from being damaged. Couches and chairs should be shrink wrapped or covered in plastic bags. Make sure you remove cushions and place them in plastic bags with an identification label attached.

It is important to disassemble any removable furniture parts such as table legs. Make sure you place any screws and nuts in a small plastic bag and label the bag to show what piece of furniture it belongs to. Make sure you provide protective padding for furniture ends and arms. One can use a towel, bubble wrap, or old sheets or blankets.

3. Breakable Items: Take great care when packing large breakable items such as floor lamps, regular lamps, and mirrors. A few layers of bubble wrap wrapped around each item will protect them from damage. You can even add a layer of old sheets or towels for extra protection. You can then slide each item in a garbage bag to protect them from moisture. For smaller fragile items, you can wrap each item in bubble wrap to ensure they don’t roll around during transport and break.

4. Utilize Boxes and Bags: There are many items that can be put in boxes and bags. Clothing can be placed in bags with their hangers included. Small and medium sized items such as silverware can be placed in boxes. It is important to label each box and list the items included on the box. You can even label each box according to what room the items will go in the new house. Then, when you unload each box, you can take them into the appropriate room in the new house.

5. Pack Smart: When you store your packed items, do not place heavy boxes on top of light boxes. Heavier boxes on the bottom will ensure the boxes do not collapse. Do not store you items in a warm room as you do not want moisture to build up inside the boxes. As well, keep items away from cold rooms and wet areas to prevent damage.

With a little organizing and preparation, the big moving day does not have to be a stressful chore. A little planning will make the moving process much easier and more enjoyable.
