Whether you are building a concrete slab for a home or paving a driveway, paving concrete must be done with care so the concrete will harden evenly. For large projects, using concrete pumping is an effective method of paving concrete. Below is a step by step guide on how to properly pave concrete evenly with concrete pumping.
1. Once you have chosen the site for your project, you must check the quality of the soil. Soft soil will require a gravel rock bedding to prevent the cement slab from sinking into the ground once it has been poured and hardens. It is important that your site is level and can withstand heavy concrete.
2. Measure the size of the area and put in markers around the site to mark off the location of the concrete pour. Dig out the site and make sure it is flat and level throughout. Add the gravel to the site and smooth it with a rock rake so that the entire area is even. A gravel rock bedding of a few inches should be adequate to properly secure the area that you will pour the concrete. Make sure the gravel is graded so that the concrete will be the same thickness throughout the site. You may want to make the edges of the site thicker to prevent cracking due to changes in the temperature.
3. Install the forms for your site which will support the concrete as you pour it. This is normally either 1x4 or 2x4 lumber that is held in position by wooden stakes. You will have to drive the stakes into the ground in order to properly secure the form boards and keep them aligned. Once the form is installed, lay a mat of steel reinforcing bars across the site for added reinforcement of the concrete. You can buy reinforcing wire mesh at any building supply store.
4. Pouring the concrete can be done by a concrete pour truck. You will need the proper tools to smooth the concrete as it is being poured. You want to keep smoothing the concrete as it is poured so it comes out even and smooth. A screed and a 2x4 lumber are good tools for smoothing the concrete. You just have to drag it across the concrete leaving a somewhat rough texture on the surface. After the concrete is dry, you will then need to apply a concrete cure to keep it from drying to quickly. The concrete slab should also be protected from moisture while it is drying.
5. Once the concrete is dry, you should apply a concrete finish to make sure the site is completely flat and even. Once this is done, remove the forms and fix any damage that may have occurred to the ground around the project site.
Paving concrete using concrete pumping is an efficient and cost effective way of pouring concrete. For large projects, one will save a lot of time using this method of concrete pour. When done correctly, paving concrete with concrete pumping will make any project less difficult and the result will be a high quality and even concrete pour.
