A wing back is a type of chair with high back and wings for the arm. Also known as winged back chair, this chair can be traced back to 1700s, when chairs were exclusive for the royalties, and later on, for the nobles.

The design of the sides, which are the wings that stretch from the back are purposely to keep the front side of the person warm while the back is cool. This chair was normally situated in front of a fireplace. Also, the wings can serve as the armrests.

Another purpose for the wings is protection of the head and torso from drafts. Today, these chairs are gracing the living room, library, and even in the bedroom. A wing back chair is known for its comfort when you sit on it.

Because it has a high back, it assures that your back is supported as well as your head is. The ancient types of winged back chairs were made of hardwood-exposed frame with padded cushions for the arm rests, seat, back, and the wings.

Today, these chairs have become more varied in style and designs. The common are wing chairs that are fully upholstered with exposed legs. Two standard wing styles are the flat wing and the scroll wing. You can also see bat wings and butterfly wings. The length and depth, as well as the shape and vertical position of the wings vary from chair to chair.

The French Upholstered wing chair, for example stands 53 inches. It has a proud and timeless stand you would want to immediately be welcomed by it. It is upholstered using linens.

Also famous in this category of chairs is the McCartney chair by the American Leather. It stands 44 inches tall, and has clean and modern look. It is fit for an apartment-size place. It uses a dark wood for its legs, and leather for the body inside and out.

The wing back chair by Tom Dixon and George Smith is 50 inches tall. If you are looking for a formal winged chair, this is it. It is very elegant, outspoken, and brassy. It deserves its own space. However, its maker says that although it is formally an upright chair, it is irreverently so.

Ethan Allen is another famous maker of wing chairs. Its Rand Wing has a length of 47 inches and width of 35 inches. Its contoured wings that will allow you to move your elbow freely will truly make you exclaim "wow". Its nailheads are made of nickel.

The Chimney Wing back chair by Edward Ferrell stand 45.5 inches tall with scrolled arms and high-barreled back. If the setting of your place is conservative, this is the perfect choice. It is also perfect for stellar reading because of its upright pitch and a lumbar pillow.

Now, if you are looking for a classic style with non-black-white color, better check out the wing back collection of the Lee Industries. Its 1307-01 comes with a button-tufted back and button-turned front legs fitted with casters. It stands 41 inches tall.
