Australia Vacation Packages - The Great Barrier Reef
Whether you are treating yourself to a relaxing weekend or looking for a great place for a romantic getaway for you and your significant other, or even just a diving enthusiast looking for a great south pacific destination to explore, there is something for virtually everybody around the Great Barrier Reef region of Australia. There are many luxurious resorts with all the accoutrements as well as some more family oriented less glitzy resorts that are still top quality. Don't let all this civilization fool you either, there are great remote getaway spots on some of the islands to enjoy camping and natural living all with the barrier reef right at the heart of it.
Finding the Best Place to Stay on the Reef
While there are a number of resorts around the region of the barrier reef, there are only a few actually on the reef itself. If you want to get up close and personal with the reef then you'll want to book a resort on Lizard Island or Hayman Island. Likewise, Heron Island and Wilson Island are both part of the massive reef system. Heron Island is a more traditional resort setting but if you're looking for something a little different you can check out Wilson. Wilson Island has room for up to a dozen guests in permanent, designer tents.
The island resorts may not be available on the dates you want them, if that is the case don't despair because there are many resorts on the headland. As an example of some that you should really look into; you can try Thala Beach Lodge, the Daintree Eco Lodge & Spa and Coconut Beach Rainforest Lodge.
When to Book Australia Vacation Packages
Australia is on the opposite corner of the world from the United States so the seasons are reversed. On top of that the positioning of the Great Barrier Reef puts it further away from the pole so it's a more tropical climate anyway. If it's winter here then Australia is in a tropical summer.
If you're going for the wildlife, check with the conservation agencies or travel guides to find out when animals are more in the open. Humpback whales can be seen from June to September and turtles will start laying eggs on the beach, with hatchlings being visible around November to May.
Getting To Your Resort
Transportation to and from the airport is not a complicated affair. This is especially true the more local to the airport your resort is. There are more than just rental cars available, there are also local transports to the resorts. Some of the more remote resorts may require using their own air transports or you might have to take a trip on a boat but they will get you there safe, happy and in one piece.
What to Bring to the Reef
Bring yourself, your sense of adventure and some simple gear for getting the water. You don't have to tote scuba gear with you but the reef is shallow, so bring some snorkel gear with a clear mask of decent quality. A comfortable mask that won't fog on you is important if you really want to enjoy what the reef has to offer. Likewise, make sure you capture memories by purchasing a quality underwater camera or buy a waterproof housing for your camera for $60 to $100.
