It began approx 2-3 years back when Apple unvield the eagerly awaited Iphone 4, finally they did, you could purchase any shade you longed for as long as it was Black, they did promise to unveil the White version but this was altered time and time again.
As you can imagine people were beginning to become a little angry about this, despite this a young chap (17 years old) from New York thought of a cunning plan, he loacted a manufacturer in China that supplied these types of kit for the Black Iphone 4, sherbang, next thing you know this whizz had sold nearly $200,000 worth of these kits, he had accomplished what Apple Inc failed to do and make people happy or supplied White Iphone 4's, yes you had to have pre-owned a Black one to start with but hey you did get a White one.
One point that this young whizz did not realise was that he could also have marketed them as replacement LCD's and backs for having a cracked screen on an Iphone 4, because lets face it, these excellent phones don't bounce very well ,ever, infact I do not know any that have, so what you then have is an original Black Iphone 4 that you have to courier to the repairers (which would have been Apple or one of it's authorised repair centres) at great cost to the idiot who dropped it.
Back to the young genius, he also showed purchasers how to remove and replace the conversion kits which also saved even more money, now lets introduce Apple who saw what this young genius was doing and to cut a long story short shut him down, lets face it Apple must have been quivering in their boots with the thought of this New Yorkers capability, $200,000 against a $100 billion dollar company, is it any wonder they closed down his operation, not only had he provided what they could not, he also showed people how to do it themselves.
If you search on the information superhighway today there are many many people auctioning these Black to Silvercolour conversion kits on the internet, the fact that Apple have eventually made available the White version of the Iphone 4 is not putting the brakes on sales, you see a lot of people are taking the conversion kits and converting Black iphone 4's with damaged lcd's and hey viola you now have an almost straight from the box White Iphone 4, you can now get them in pretty much any colour you want, Gold and Silver included.
Are they worth having, you really have to look as to what you expect from the converting kits, I think, now, if you broke your precious iphone 4 and smashed it to pieces and fancied a different look for your phone then ok they're well worth it, if you want a brand new iphone 4 in White then its more convenient to purchase one from Apple but if you then broke that, then look no more than a conversion kit, they are undoubtably a more cost effective way to get your iphone fixed or sawp the colourcolorE of them.
