I would consider myself somewhat of a handyman. I am able to adequately manouever my way around my tools and am fairly competent in figuring out how things go together and such. However, when I found myself wanting to take up the hobby of woodworking I realized I couldn't just make up my projects on the go.
A quick search of the internet for woodworking plans brought me to Ted's Woodworking Plans. After looking at a few different sites and deciding that I liked his the best, (it looked the most professional), I read over the information and decided, "what the heck?", the money isn't going to kill me and out of 16,000 plans there had to be some in there that I would like to tackle.
Making the transaction was easy enough and in a matter of days I had Ted's Woodworking Plans in my hands.
Initially, I found myself overwhelmed with just the quantity of plans. It was hard to decide which one to do. One thing on note, and I thank Ted for this, is there are a variety of plans that cover different skill sets from easy to more complicated. This is also very helpful because if you don't know already, depending on what type of woodworking project you are taking on, you need to consider whether you have the tools to complete the project.
Not everyone has a fully outfitted woodworking shop in their backyard but rest assured you'll find a project in the 16,000 plans that you can make with the tools you have. I decided to build a simple bench for my back porch but the 16,000 plans cover everything from coffee tables, to cabins, to sheds, to boxes and so on. Basically, you name it and Ted's got a plan for it.
As I set out to make my bench my first impressions of the plan I was following was it was easy to follow and layed out step by step. The plan came with blueprints and a list of all the materials I would need. This was really helpful as I was able to get all the materials ahead of time in one trip instead of running back and forth to the hardware store.
Ted's Woodworking Plans claims that your skill level doesn't matter. You don't need to be a carpenter to make beautiful woodworking projects. I have to say that I think, obviously, not being a complete cluts will definitely help and being able to read and follow directions is a plus. However, I will say that despite my reservations going into the project, my bench turned out very nicely thankyou! I put a nice stain on it and it looks like it was meant for my porch! In fact, I plan on using Ted's Woodworking plans to build a shed in my backyard. I'll let you know how it goes!
