Oscar Night - aka The Academy Awards - is among the most celebrated events not only in Hollywood but all throughout the world. How could it not be? We are all enthralled by the wonder of the entertainment industry and when Oscar Night arrives, the best of the very best in cinematic achievement for the year are honored with prestigious awards.
Now, here is a trivia question you can ask people: where are the Academy Awards held. The answer you will likely (and correctly) get is Hollywood. So, press the person and ask WHERE in Hollywood are the awards held? You will then likely get a blank look.
Here is the answer: The Hollywood and Highland Center and it is among the least known and appreciated of the legendary Hollywood Landmarks. Again, the reason is many do not know this is the site of the academy awards.
The Hollywood & Highland Center is actually a shopping mall and entertainment complex at Hollywood Boulevard and Highland Avenue in the center of Hollywood. The shopping center truly is state of the art with scores of amazing new establishments within it. There are stores, restaurants, nightclubs, and even a bowling alley. So, you will never run out of things to do when you visit this landmark.
Of course, these new developments pale in comparison to the many amazing classic landmarks of Hollywood history that the Hollywood & Highland Center basks in the glory of. The Kodak Theatre and the famous Grauman's Chinese Theatre are directly next to it and the legendary Hollywood Walk of Fame is right in front of it.
If you look to the west, you will see the most famous of all the landmarks in the city: you will see the classic Hollywood sign on the side of the visible Santa Monica Mountains. When you stand in the Hollywood & Highland Center, you truly are standing amidst history which is why visiting this complex is so strongly recommended.
The actual look of the complex also incorporates quite a bit of history. Those that are serious and avid film fans will likely recognize the courtyard is a minor replica of the Babylon scene from legendary director D.W. Griffith's epic film Intolerance.
Granted, you would have to be a real student of film history to recognize such a replica. However, you do not need to know anything about silent movies to realize that this replica truly is stunning. In all honesty, very little in the Hollywood region can match the sheer visual brilliance of the Hollywood & Highland Center. Consider that one of the many reasons it is so significantly crowded both during the day and the evening.
Even though it is a relatively new construct, the Hollywood & Highland Center remains one of the more intriguing venues to visit in Hollywood. As such, all those visiting Hollywood need to invest a little time exploring it.
