The great and famous Sage, Lao Tzu, says "The soft and yielding will overcome the hard and rigid". Nowhere is this metaphor more obvious then in the practice of Soft Style Kung Fu!

In my opinion one of the biggest and most unique gifts that the Smiling Dragon Kung Fu Academy in Somers Point, Atlantic County brings to martial arts in nj is a genuine embracing of this principle. NJ martial arts needs more of this ancient understanding, and it needs it in ways that are practical and applicable, not just as a nice sounding theory!

Because of my very strong background in the deep, full body relaxation aspects of traditional Yogic Practices, and the profoundly soft influence that I have gained through my training in Ba Gua, I bring a very sensitive aspect to my particular expression of Wing Chun in NJ. South Jersey residents who desire to study genuine Kung Fu from an "internal" point of view can develop and/or augment their NJ martial arts training with not only the cultivation of "chi" (this mysterious yet quantifiable life-force power), but also the realistic application of it in real time self-defense scenarios.

It is not easy to find martial arts classes in NJ that will show you, directly and immediately, the proper understanding of how to effectively utilize chi in combat. The benefit of this, especially for women, children and more sensitive, not so large and muscular men, is that you can automatically realize that there is no need to envy or emulate really huge, testosteronic men who can rely more upon there sheer physical power to inflict injury for self
defense in NJ.

Really big and aggressive men, who may have natural attributes that they can apply and/or who may enhance their natural size advantage with weight training and other methods, can take advantage of their strength in fighting scenarios with direct results. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that, and I think a good axiom for any NJ martial arts would be the sagacious saying from the healers in Hawaii "Effectiveness is the measure of truth". But, at the same time, a hard style approach of overpowering with sheer force will simply not work for everybody's self defense in NJ. Those who do not have these natural physical attributes need not feel inferior or spend the day in the gym just to try to duplicate this approach.

No, if you live in Atlantic County, South Jersey you can learn to embrace the body and temperament that you were born with. You can be truly confident that you can pragmatically and triumphantly defend yourself with your NJ Kung Fu by learning some basic insight and understanding.

Be Well & Thrive,
Sifu David William Shaman
