There have been a lot of debates about onsite and offsite seo and which is more important. If you ask me, I will tell you that both are equally important to achieving the desired result. They both work in conjunction to bring the positive result we desire to achieve and have a high ranking on the search engine.
First of all let us get to understand what onsite seo means. By onsite seo, we mean optimizing a site with our chosen keywords which include adding keywords in the title, description, meta tags and where ever deem fit to get our site noticed by the search machines.
Offsite seo is mainly about link building. The search machines use the number of back links pointing to a site to know exactly where to rank a site on the SERP.
What this means is you can't neglect any of this methods of optimizing a site and still be listed high on the SERP. If you fail to do good onsite seo your site won't be ranked on the SERP while if you fail to do offsite seo you won't get a chance to be listed high on the search engine. Why do people do SEO? To have their site listed on the search machines. If you miss to properly do any of the two you stand little chance of ranking high or been ranked at all.
The onsite seo is what tells the search engines the particular keywords that you are targeting on your web page. In the past, webmasters use to stuff their site keyword tags with irrelevant search phrase just to get lots of visitors to their site but things have changed now. The search machines use much better software to identify and read a web content for keywords related to the site. Once the keywords on the content tallies with what is chosen on your title, meta tag, description tag or domain. The site will be listed on the SERP for the chosen search phrase but this does not help in ranking a site high on the search report. Let's get this clear here, if I own a site on book and one of my chosen keyword is half priced book. I will optimize my site for half priced book and when I use rank checker to search for half priced book I should be able to view my site for that particular phrase irrespective of the position my site is going to be listed.
Offsite seo is what actually determines where a site is ranked and it has always been better if a site is listed on the first page of the search machines. Like I mentioned earlier, the search engines use the amount of back links pointing to a site to know exactly where to rank it among others. This makes it important to have lots of quality back links more than your competitor in order to beat them. As you can see the two optimization methods are equally vital to a site performance.
