Checking website traffic is something that every marketer should do. It does not matter what your website or blog is about, how long you have had it, the type of content it has or how pretty or ugly it looks. There are important reasons why you should take a little bit of time to check your traffic, but there are also reasons why you should not constantly waste your time doing this. I know that the majority of us marketers have blogs and different websites set up with our top priority being the traffic. In this article I will tell you why you should not waste a lot of time on doing this, but also why checking website traffic is so important.
Doing this activity should not be number one on your to do list because you have much more important things to do like getting leads, prospecting, sponsoring etc. However the main reason why checking website traffic is so important is because it allows you to track any progress you are making. It gives you the opportunity to see what is working and what isn't. Checking the amount of traffic your site gets shows you what your market is interested in, or what they really couldn't give two doughnuts about. At the end of the day, you should be taking some time out to analyse and see how things are going. This should only take you 5-10 minutes though so do not waste precious time on an activity that will not bring you the big results.
Also checking website traffic does not have to take up hours of your time in terms of research or finding the right tools. For example I personally use Google Analytics along with Alexa to see how things are going with my blog. Both of these are great tools which show me what is in demand and what is yesterday's news. The more in demand something is, the quicker I will write some fresh content and get it out there. A couple other tools you could use to check your traffic are Quarkbase and Search Status which are also pretty good from what I have read.
They were the reasons why checking website traffic is so important and should be done say once a week or once every two weeks. The reasons why you should NOT constantly check your traffic and waste precious amounts of time are because the numbers will not get any higher by staring at the screen. Just like with anything else in business, it will take and dedication on your part before you begin to get more traffic. Many new marketers will take every opportunity they get to check their stats. Even though they have the right intentions, checking website traffic every hour or 5 times a day will not get you results. It is activities like creating content, marketing and prospecting that will bring in the results.
Another reason why you should not waste endless time on analysing your website statistics is because they could de-motivate you. If you are an online marketer and are de-motivated, chances are that you will not get very far in terms of taking action and getting results. Checking website traffic every hour or every day will not make a difference to your site or your level of success. More importantly though, and this is something that happens with the beginners, when you see no results or large numbers of traffic coming to your site, this will affect you negatively and you will end up quitting or giving up all together.
Time management counts for a lot in the online marketing and home based business industry. The better you manage your time, the more beneficial it will be for you. You need to prioritise your activities and see which ones will help in bringing in the traffic and bringing in the leads. Checking website traffic is useful and can guide you to your next step, but spending more time on checking traffic than committing to that next step is not the best thing to do.
