Herpes simplex virus is an infectious viral skin disease that causes cold sores on the human body. These sores are small, painful and form blisters around the mouth and facial area. This kind of disease is very common especially in the developed countries where kissing is common. Oral herpes is usually transmitted through kissing, air, skin contact and intercourse. It is estimated that millions of men, women and children have been infected with this viral disease in the United State of America alone.
Other areas herpes affect people are the fingers, genital, eyes, and much more. The virus that affects the genital is quite different from the one that affect the mouth and facial area. However, oral herpes can be found on the genital and genital herpes can be found on the mouth. This normally happens when there is oral intercourse with infected people.
Prodromal symptoms of this disease include painful sores, itching, swollen glands and blisters which begin to manifest in about two to ten days of infection. The blisters will eventually break open and let out fluid which is highly contagious. It is during this period that this virus is easily passed on to others at the slightest touch.
People tend to confuse canker sores with cold sores but the fact is they are quite different. Cold sores occur around the outer lips area while canker sore is found inside the mouth. A sore on the mouth tissue is often known as canker sores and not cold sores.
The means by which oral herpes get into the body of the non infected person is through body contact, saliva or genital fluid of infected person. The virus enters the body through an opening on the skin or membrane. The opening can be on the skin or mouth and genital membrane. The virus can also be transmitted to other parts of the body of an infected person when there is a constant scratching of the blisters. These blisters contain fluids and when the blister is busted it can be spread to other parts of the body.
One thing a lot of people don't know about this condition is, not everyone get to experience the symptoms of this disease when infected. Some don't get to see the symptoms at all and yet the virus can still be transmitted to others. After the initial episode the symptoms of oral herpes disease tend to vanish away without any treatment and the virus goes into an inactive period. During this stage, the symptoms will become less and there will only be occasional outbreak.
No cure for oral herpes or cold sores has yet been discovered. However, there are several medications and suppressant like Famvir, Acyclovir, Lysine and Red Marine Algae that is good for curbing the symptoms of this virus. Red marine algae boost the body immune system and fight against virus.
Prevention still remains better than cure. It is vital to avoid kissing and having intercourse with people you are not sure of their status.
