The simple answer to this inquiry is yes. Laser tattoo removal can be successful with all skin tones. As in all aspects of this medical process, many additional factors will help to determine just how successful it will be for each individual.
The easiest and most successful cases are those with light or fair skinned individuals with small, superficially placed tattoos on the legs, chest, and arm area. Laser does not work as well on newer tattoos. The most difficult candidates are darker skinned people wishing to remove tattoos in the ankles, shoulders, and other areas without much body fat. With the more difficult candidates, the degree of the success rate is more varied. Any high-principled laser office should be very up front with explaining the realistic expectations prior to beginning procedures.
With darker skin there is also more of a risk of hypopigmentation and hyperpigmentaiton.
Hyperpigmentation is a big word that basically means too much color or pigment. It can be caused by trauma to the skin such as laser tattoo removal. It looks like a dark flat spot. If you doctor determines that you are at risk for this condition from laser removal, then usually more sessions than normal will be needed to eradicate the body art. It may also be impossible to remove a darker color that closely matches the person's skin color.
Hypopigmentation basically refers to skin lighter in skin tone than surrounding skin color. This also can be a result of trauma to the skin caused by laser treatment and chemical tattoo removal.
Whether you are light or dark skinned, consulting with your doctor should be the first step you take before making that first appointment with a laser removal clinic. He or she will be able to determine what, if any, concerns you should have if you happen to have skin that is more difficult to treat because of darker pigment.
Once your doctor has given his consent, consult with a reputable tattoo removal specialist in your area. Since it will probably take multiple appointments, you need to have a clinic that is convenient. The tattoo removal specialist should be honest when outlining your particular case.
