The iPhone and other smartphones running the Android operating system are much more than just phones. In addition to making calls, you can access the Internet via a mobile browser, and you can download apps which turn your phone into a device with nearly infinite capability.
Without further adieu, here are a few of my favorite apps that are available for free, or a small but worthwhile fee.
1. Angry Birds - I know this game is probably well known to many smartphone users, but it must be included because of how addictive it is! If you need to kill some time, Angry Birds will surely keep you occupied while you wait. They also come out with a seasonal edition to spice things up every few months.
2. Backgrounds - Many people enjoy personalizing their home screen, and this app gives you plenty of picture choices to fit the style you choose. From high quality photos to computer generated graphics, you are sure to find something to your liking.
3. Dictionary - Use this app to quickly find the meaning of any word you choose. They also have a homepage widget for the word of the day along with other options. I find this a great way to increase my vocabulary the more that I read, and it has come in handy on a couple of occasions while playing Scrabble!
4. Google Sky Map - This is more of a fun app, however it is sure to turn heads giving the 'cool' factor. With a GPS and accelerometer, Google Sky Map allows you to point your phone to the sky and see which stars or constellations you are looking at. You can even search for objects such as the Moon or other planets and it will guide you in the right direction to see them in plain sight.
5. Mint.com - If your money is scattered between several accounts, Mint.com is a great way to monitor all of your financial assets in a single location. The Android app allows you to quickly check the status of several accounts at once, along with setting budgets and other financial goals that you strive to abide by.
6. Google Music - The service is still in it's beginning stages, however the idea is pretty straightforward: upload all of your music to their cloud servers, automatically sync with your music library, and stream any song in your library to your Android phone. Now any time you add music to your iTunes, it will upload it to Google Music automatically and you can listen to it anywhere. If you love music like I do this is one of the best things that could have happened to Android.
With a smartphone in your hand, you can accomplish a lot even when you are away from your home or office. This list of apps is by no means extensive, and I encourage everyone to take a few minutes every now and then to browse the app market - new and useful apps are being released every day by creative software developers around the world.
