Travelling with children, especially preschoolers can make for a very noisy trip. After hearing "are we there yet?" thirteen times in two miles, you might begin to wish you and your kids had just stayed home.
You don't need to be afraid any longer weary traveling parents. There is hope. A little bit of planning is all it takes to make your next road trip a more enjoyable one.
It can be as simple as providing some entertainment. A bored child is a cranky, difficult child. Ask each child to choose three to five toys to bring with them. Making a child part of the planning process will help them feel like they are more a part of the trip and be able to enjoy it more.
Don't just let the kids choose everything, pack in a few surprises that you know the kids will love to mix things up a bit. Bringing out something that they're not expecting will break the monotony of travel. Coloring books and crayons, books, pocket games, window markers and play clay will help keep your child occupied.
When the toys and games from home lose their ability to entertain, turn to fun and interesting road games. See who can find more blue cars in two miles, or count out of state license plates. Older kids will have fun counting how many license plates have the letter "C" or the number 4. Parents and kids can take turns telling a story, round robin style. The story starts with one sentence from one person who passes it on. As the story gets passed around each person will add to it.
You always know that when you're in the middle of nowhere a child will complain that they are hungry. Everyone knows that kids who are hungry are the ones most difficult to deal with. Always be prepared with a cooler full of fun easy to eat snacks. Healthy snacks are the best kinds as they are refreshing. Cut sticks of vegetables such as carrots and celery and make sandwiches out of fun shapes. Soft drinks and other sugary beverages should be avoided as these will just make the children hyper and restless. Sitting in a car gives them no way to burn all that excess energy off. Juice boxes or pouches are not good choices in the car. When your child squeezes the container, juice will spray the entire car.
A road trip can be a great bonding experience for the whole family.
