There has been a steady increase in childhood obesity in the United States and it continues to baffle and confound professionals of every stripe. It doesn't help that almost all solid food sold in the US contains a bunch of high fructose corn syrup. That, though, is an issue best left for another day. Obese children almost seem like they never had a chance at life, and we feel that is a sad testimony. In addition to the bullying they have to endure from their peers, the kids also suffer from a variety of physical problems ranging from back pain and arthritis to Type II diabetes. There is more to think about in terms of this sad state of affairs and we'll talk about some of that in the following paragraphs.
The variety of medical problems experienced by obese young people is big. Lots of different things, including genetics, have influence here. Severely obese kids can easily develop a bunch of different problems in their bones and joints. Many times the load bearing joints in particular will develop problems. The skeletal stress will occur in the hips, knees, ankles and feet. Kids are going to have to deal with joint pain, typically in their backs as well as constant low swelling around their joints. Kids and teens are very commonly diagnosed with arthritis as well. Worldwide medical research has confirmed that obstructive sleep apnea is more common in obese children. This specific condition is quite serious because what happens is that the child's airway gets blocked when he or she is asleep. Kids who are overweight and obese are more likely to snore too but, according to researchers, that is actually deceiving. The reason for the snoring (some of the time anyway) is OSA or Obstructive Sleep Apnea. The adenotonsillectomy is one possible solution to the problem of sleep apnea in children and teens who are obese.
When this is paired with the bullying and general social ostracizing they deal with at school and kids and teens who suffer from obesity are almost guaranteed to develop some sort of social dysfunction. Another term people use is "social disabilities" which come with a high degree of high levels of unhappiness, depression, etc. A natural result from this is an exceedingly high stress level which is widely recognized as having unhealthy psychological and physical problems. One potential reaction is for obese children to become bullies themselves. What, obviously, is happening here is that the behavior is a sign of the anger that has more than likely accumulated from being bullied themselves.
Obviously, obese children are at tremendous physical and social disadvantages once they have reached their condition. We all know how hard it is to lose weight and that you have to be very determined and have lots of support to do it. Friends and parents need to be as supportive as possible. Children and young adults are very resilient and can usually bounce back once a more healthy direction is taken. Obviously, however that depends on what--if any--serious medical conditions have been made apparent.
