Many people are not aware of the fact that during the winter months our garages are the most under utilized space in our homes. This is simply because in most parts of the country, a garage is too cold of a space for anyone to want to be in it for an extended period of time. Installing an electric garage heater can be just the answer to regaining this under utilized space year-round.

When it comes to electric garage heaters there are two types of heating elements infrared/radiant or convection. A closer look at both the models is merited to decide which will be the best for your situation.

What Makes Infrared Heaters Work

Infrared heating is the transfer of thermal energy in the form of electromagnetic waves. In short, infrared heaters work by heating the objects or the body in a particular spot directly under or in front of the heater, while convection heaters will heat the entire room. So the first decision you will need to make before purchasing a garage heaters is do you want the heater to heat a specific spot while you are in your garage or do you want to heat the entire garage while you are in it? For those who choose a convection heater, knowing the exact size of the space and doing the right space calculations is important before you purchase your heater. There are calculators available for use at most any website that sells electric garage heaters for you to use, you simply impute the length, width and height of your garage and a few other variables to determine the correct size needed.

There are different ways to install your electric garage heater inside your garage too. Some examples are stand alone, wall mounted and pole mounted units. They also come in ceramic, quartz, glass, metal-sheathed (tubular), and open coil. Quartz and ceramic are generally the best materials. Why? This is because in enclosed spaces ceramic and quartz elements in electric heaters will provide a more even and gentle source of heat.

If you are looking to heat your garage quickly, you will want to consider purchasing a commercial grade unit heater for your garage. Commercial grade garage heaters have a large fan and motor and therefore are the loudest of the four types simply because they are moving the most air. These are recommended for larger garages and can be mounted from a wall or ceiling with the use of brackets.

Wall heaters, on the other hand, are used mostly in small to medium-sized garages. They are usually mounted from a wall stud and the smaller fan and motor make them much quieter. Ceiling heaters works great when there is little to no wall space available for use. The ceiling heaters do have a down side to them in that they require that there be a finished ceiling for them to work efficiently. This is because if the ceiling is unfinished, much of the air will be lost into the beams and joist instead.

The electric garage heaters that are wall mounted are either controlled by a built-in or wall mounted thermostat. Depending on the model, you may have the option of either type or only have one that comes standard with the unit. You should keep this feature in mind when you are making your selection.

In conclusion, keep in mind that electric garage heaters are manufactured specifically for the use of heating large garage spaces. If you select the right model, you will be able to heat your garage comfortably in the winter and be able to use it year round.
