For the most part, lodging is broken into three separate categories: full service, limited service and extended stay. Different places will offer different hotel facilities and it is always good know what to expect to get the most bang for your dollar. Full service is not always needed when the only thing being used is the bed.

Extended stays are exactly that, a place where someone can stay over a long period of time and get a very reasonable rate. They offer limited amenities are very useful for people that are relocating and do not have a place to stay at yet. For the most part, you are going to get a clean room and very little else.

With the lower price, very little is to be expected in regards to service received. They will usually offer maid service once a week with an option to pay for it if it is desired more frequently. While there may be a pool, it is very unlikely, but they will offer laundry facilities on property for their guests.

Limited service has changed quite a bit over the years and they offer more value now than ever. This is a very profitable niche in the hotel industry and while the owners would like to keep it that way, they are now offering services that they have never before in an effort to get the cost minded traveler to switch from full service to limited service.

A lot of the little things will be presents at limited service, such as maid service, and some properties will offer a free continental or hot breakfast for their guests. There might be a restaurant on property, but it will probably be more of a café style that fine dining. While pools are sometimes available, they are usually an exception rather than the rule.

When someone wants all the bells and whistles, they should stay at a full service hotel. The rates will be more than limited service, but knowing the area can help to get a lower rate. For instance, full service property that is surrounded by a cluster of limited service properties will be forced to lower their rates and actually offer the traveler a bargain for the amenities in order to keep their rooms filled.

A typical example of a full service hotel would be Marriott. They have an exceptional rewards program that really takes care of their VIP guests. These hotels will have a full service restaurant, banquet facilities, VIP lounge, free breakfast and plenty more to lure people to stay there. For someone that wants to want for nothing, this is the level of lodging that they would want.

Each and every level of the hotel industry is there to meet a need. If a traveler is coming in late and leaving early, why pay the price of full service when limited service will do? If they are going to be working all the time and staying at a location for a month, consider extended stay versus wasting money on full service. Figure out your needs and then pick the level of service that fits your desires and budget the best.
