For years, Microsoft Xbox 360 owners and PlayStation 3 owners have argued about which console is best. The debate over which is best still continues years after each of the models have been released and there has yet to emerge a clear winner in the debate. This article will likely not resolve the debate either, but I will attempt to lay out what I see are some of the strong points for each gaming system.
Cost: The price of such units has long been a crucial factor for many, and you will find that the choice is not quite straightforward. There are actually quite a few different price points for each unit, since you can purchase the consoles with different sized hard drives and other add ons. Overall, however, the Xbox is the cheaper of the two gaming systems when you look at consoles with similar sized drives and features. You will also want to compare prices in different stores and online as well, since you may save quite a bit of money purchasing them on sale at certain times of the year.
Graphics: Another key determining features will be the quality of the graphics for the games themeselves. In all honesty, both gaming systems offer superb graphics, and although some may argue that Sony has a bit of an edge in the graphics department, this is certainly not a consensus. Also, some may argue that while Sony might have superior graphics by an edge, the Xbox has superior graphics computing power.
Supporting media: this includes add on accessories and the ability to integrate with various services and other hardware both online and offline. The PlayStation 3, for example, allows you to play Blu-Ray movies on your console as well as play your favorite games. On the other hand, the has been a little slower to embrace as many media platforms, although in recent years it has started to really advance on this front. One of the reasons, however, that the Sony PlayStation 3 is generally a bit more expensive than the Xbox 360 is because it has more multi-media capabilities.
Breakdowns and Need for Repairs: The Microsoft Xbox 360 may be slightly more prone to problems, including the infamous "red ring of death" problem.
Online Play: You will want to consider how good your console plays with others online. Online gaming has really taken off in recent years, and both of these gaming consoles are well suited for playing online with friends. Sony, however, has been the target of several hacking attacks and their online system has been compromised in the past as a result. The Xbox 360 online system seems more stable and safer than Sony's.
In terms of game selection, the choice is really tough as to which gaming system is better. Both gaming consoles have a wide variety of games to select from, and each has some "exclusive" games only available to play on the particular console. But by and large, many gamers would argue that Sony PlayStation 3 has more games available to play overall.
And of course we haven't even looked at the Nintendo Wii in this article. It is always important to keep in mind that there are other selections beyond the Sony PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 to consider. It remains to be seen if the Nintendo Wii will eventually become more popular than either the Xbox 360 or the PlayStation 3. Sony and Microsoft are starting to integrate new features (such as the Xbox "Kinect") to combat Nintendo's rising market share, however. In fact, PS3's "move" technology is a direct response to Nintendo's popularity.
A Brief Summary: One thing to keep in mind is that for 2012, the playing field is still wide open and which gaming system will emerge as the best is still an open question.
