What is yoga?

Dating back thousands of years, yoga is an almost holy eastern tradition that connects the human body with the mind. Fantastically weaving with each other the disciplines of exercise and meditation, yoga uses a selection of postures and movements to decrease stress, increase stamina, foster a feeling of well-being and enhance the flexibility of mind, body and spirit.
A combination of yoga based core asana postures strength movement brings focus to all major muscle groups and provides the foundation for a stronger, more stable, balanced body.

What type of yoga do you offer at Chi Yoga?

We draw upon a rich spectrum of Hatha yoga/Qigong philosophies and techniques. Classes begin with the practice of postures, a focus on breath and sensation, and culminate with inner stillness and lying meditation.

What is Chi Kung?

Chi Kung = THE SKILL OF ATTRACTING VITAL ENERGY. Chi Kung comes from two Chinese words: Qi (chi) means energy and gong (kung) means a skill or a practice. Qigong therefore means a skill or practice of cultivating energy. There are various kinds of qigong -- broadly categorized as internal and external. Internal qigong is much like meditation, with visualizations in order to guide the energy. External qigong includes movement accompanying the meditation. Qigong is famous in China for curing chronic disease and promoting health.

Is it the same as Qigong?
Yes. Qi, chi, ji, chi'h and others are all various transliterations for the Chinese word for energy. It is generally pronounced as "chee". Kung or gong is the Chinese word for a skill or practice. I pronounce it as gong - the musical instrument.

Why should I learn Chi Yoga?

Chi Yoga can improve your physical and mental health. It provides all the benefits of meditation/energy work (chi kung), and yoga strengthening and stretching exercises (Hatha) Yet Chi Yoga is much more than a discipline of physical exercise. It is a powerful, transformational practice that integrates all parts of who you are.

It is a clearing process, a way of encountering and releasing physical, mental and emotional blocks that may be keeping you from living life to your fullest potential.

Class by class, as you fully engage in your yoga practice, bringing focus and attention to every breath and movement, the body relaxes, the mind is calmed and inner strength emerges. The enhancement of the mind/body connection increases your awareness of where your body needs work - where your body needs changes related to diet, exercise, sleep, lifestyle, etc.
