Yoga is a Sanskrit word that means to "Yoke up". In this process we use the body and mind. Yoga is the evolution of the union of body and mind through spirit. A beautiful dance of grace that invites balance and harmony through the use of Hatha and Radja Yogas.
Hatha Yoga is an external Yoga. We use the body through postures (asanas) and breath to bring our physical being into balance.
Radja Yoga is an internal Yoga. We use our mind to quiet the whirlwind of activity that keeps us from balance and harmony.
In the United States the most common Yoga practice is Hatha Yoga. Its effects of relaxation, increased flexibility, strength, vitality, improved concentration and immune system function are well known and documented.
Hatha Yoga is now used in musculo-skeletal problems and training athletes. The great physical benefits of Yoga are only a small part of a wide spectrum of benefits.
The overall discipline of Yoga involves working with the mind and it's effect on every aspect of our existence (physical, emotional, spiritual). The goal of Yoga is to peel away layers of self-induced clutter that cloud our ability to see clearly. This brings a clarity to see life without ego interference. It is self-empowering and invites personal growth. One learns to be kind and gentle to one's self, and this reflects to the world.
