Texas Longhorns are more than a University mascot. Texas Longhorn cattle are piece of living history. They are also considered by many to be the future. In 1927 a movement by government and private cattleman was started to preserve the breed. The Texas Longhorn was thought of as an important genetic link. Today these efforts are greatly appreciated by modern cattleman. The breed is no longer exclusively thought of in a romantic light. They are being thought of as a beef herd builder. The genetically diverse Longhorn is being viewed as a way to build a better herd.
The Longhorns genetic predisposition to produce leaner meat is a definite plus to the cattle producer. The breed's natural selection refinement produced an animal that requires less dietary supplements. Forage is utilized to the utmost in the Longhorn. The Longhorn tends to bare more live calves than many other types of cattle. That in itself is a selling point to cattleman.
The desirability of Texas Longhorn cattle is still quite relevant. The Longhorns history and its genetic make up is the reason the breed was originally sought after 500 years ago. Today the Longhorn is being revisited by the cattle industry for the exact same reason.
