Most individuals are aware of turtles except for the fact that not the entire turtle population is exactly similar. There are tortoises or land turtles. In terms of physical characteristics, it is not easy to find out the difference between turtle and tortoise. Tortoises are turtles that thrive on land. Just like sea turtles, their marine connections, they're sheltered by a shell on their backs. They differ in sizes and are withdrawn animals.

Biologists as well as ordinary people generally refer to chelonians as turtles, even to tortoises and this act ignores the difference between turtle and tortoise. Turtles generally inhabit places close to a body of water body. They have bodies adapted to swimming and holding their breath underwater. Meanwhile, tortoises dwell in arid regions and have bodies and feet for walking on dry grounds.

In biology, tortoises are sub species of turtle although not every turtle is a tortoise. This is a general distinction or difference between turtle and tortoise. The entire types of land and aquatic turtles differ in sizes, shapes and even colors. Terrapins are creatures which drop anywhere between a turtle and a tortoise. They live among marshy regions. They can also establish life undersea then later on transfer to dry lands.

What are some other ways to know the difference between turtle and tortoise? While turtles can reside in freshwater, ocean, marshland or brackish ponds, tortoises can only wade among the streams for the purpose of cleaning themselves or sipping water. When submerged, they might drown which commonly happens when they reach deep water portions and especially when the currents are strong as well. The front feet of marine turtles may serve as fins. They also have webbed toes with slick back feet for swimming. Conversely, tortoises have scaly, nubby and hard feet that facilitate their need to crawl among sharp rocks, sand and land.

To establish the major difference between turtle and tortoise, observe some of their physical distinctiveness and movements. Turtles have leveled backs unlike tortoises and live most of their lives undersea. They mate then lay eggs submerged or in shores. Through cold weather, they can dig holes and hibernate under the mud.

Eating inclination and preference can also identify the difference between turtle and tortoise. Turtles are omnivorous and feast on fishes, insects and plants. Tortoises are herbivorous and feed on cactus, shrubs and more plants with plenty of moisture in them.
