Are you looking for a position in the exciting world of advertising? If you are a young graphic designer seeking your first big break, here is a brief overview of how to enter the field of graphic design.

1) Welcome to the exciting world of advertising

Advertising is one of the most of fast paced and interesting business worlds that you will encounter. If you re a person who feels right at home on the busy streets Manhattan, particularly Madison Avenue, then you may be the right candidate to succeed in advertising.

2) Why should you consider a career in advertising?

If you re starting a career in graphic design, then you can decide on different options. Advertising is one of the most sought after graphic design industries because designers earn high salaries for their work. Turn on the TV and look at the different commercials. For each commercial, a designer had to conceive and execute the project. With huge advertising budgets, it is no surprise that the advertising industry is the best paid industry for a graphic designer.

2) The disadvantages of working in advertising as a graphic designer.

We have learned the advantages of working in advertising as a graphic designer, including the high pay. But what are the disadvantages? The primary disadvantage is that job security can be a problem. Dealing with so many different marketplace dynamics, as well as changes of ownership, performance, private conflicts and competition, makes the world of advertising unstable. Let s say you work at a small agency. You are assigned a project. Everything is going well, but then the client decides he wants someone else to handle the account. This is predicament is common in advertising. This scenario would not pose a major problem in a large company, but in a smaller firm, this usually results in lost accounts.

4) The two different kinds of advertising.

You can find different types of advertising, but the two main categories are print and broadcast. If you work in print, you will work with magazine ads, purchase displays, posters, labels and more. If you work in broadcast advertising, you ll work in television or radio.

5) The different roles in advertising.

You may take on different job roles in an advertising agency. The account executive is a person who acts as liaison between the client and the agency. This person has training in advertising and marketing. They work with the client, deal with the media department, stay in touch with the research department and generally keep the project on track. Other important roles include the copywriter and the art director. In general, the art director is in charge of layouts. The copywriter is responsible for producing the copy; and the creative director is in charge of everything in the production.

6) Getting the perfect entry level position.

With growing competition in a crowded graphic design market, it can be tough to even get through the door. Take heart, though. You can find plenty of entry level positions open to you. These jobs will generally consist of putting together layouts and basic design spreads, although these can lead to more creative and complex projects.
