Did you know that when you yawn you are attempting to wake yourself up? Most people equate yawns with sleepiness. This might be true, but not as a sign you should go to sleep, but that your body wants to wake up from sleepiness.
How does a yawn wake you up? Yawns supply a vast increase in oxygen supply making us more alert. The domino effect of yawning often spills over into others who will yawn when they see others doing the same. This may signal the need for a greater alertness of those around you at any given time. Interestingly this phenomenon is not limited to humans, but to other animals and birds.
When it comes to Internet marketing there may be a need for a symbolic yawn from time to time. There can be a drowsiness based on the sameness of your site that encourages a renewed wakefulness.
Too often we tend to view our websites as good enough. We move forward with no clear vision for infusing new life into our sites. We are lulled to sleep when we really need a colossal wake up call.
Here are some questions you might ask yourself to see if it might induce a refreshing ‘yawn’ into your online business.
1. Does the site have a clear purpose or mission statement? If not, is there a way to make it more clear and concise?
2. Does the site have takeaway value? If not, what can I do to allow my potential customers more value just for visiting my site?
3. Is the site easy to use? If not, what can I do today to make things easier?
4. Is the site design cluttered? If so, what can I do to streamline the look?
5. Does my content provide bullet points? If not, what can I do to help readers who skim to find the information they need?
6. Does my product line include descriptions? If not, what can I do to begin connecting the dots for consumers?
7. Have I developed ways to encourage list building? If not, what can I do to encourage visitors to pass along their email address for marketing purposes?
8. Is my site maximized for Search Engine Optimization (SEO)? If not, what can I do today to identify keywords or phrases and then begin making positive changes to site content?
Finding new and innovative ways to facilitate an online business ‘yawn’ can be important to awakening an otherwise tired firm. It can become easy to be lured into a sense of drowsiness by a business that seems to operate well enough, but isn’t moving forward very well on its own.
If this describes your business then pick one of the questions listed above and seek to answer it honestly and with an eye toward waking up your business in response to the question. Do the same tomorrow – and the next day – then keep going.
Your responses will say a lot about your interest in growing your business. There is nothing quite like having renewed purpose and passion for an existing company. If you are a new business you can use the above questions to help you pinpoint better ways to launch your business – better ways to stay alert in a climate of sleepy business.
For the sake of your company just yawn.
