Colorado is the only known state to have declined to host the Winter Olympics. The Winter Olympics of 1976 were offered to Colorado but rejected by over 60% of voters at the last minute. The rejection was prompted by concerns about pollution, the costs of staging the games and the boom in population that could result.
The town of Fruita in Colorado celebrates an annual event that is known as 'Mike the Headless Chicken Day'. It appears that on September 10, 1945, a local farmer L.A. Olsen cut off Mike's head in preparation for a chicken dinner. However, Mike lived for another four years without his head.

It was selected after a sociologist at Queens College processed statistics from the Census Bureau to pinpoint the city that best symbolized how the population of the United States is made up.
The Kit Carson County Carousel which is located in Burlington, Colorado, was built in 1905 which makes it the oldest carousel in the United States which is made entirely of wood. Another distinctive feature of this merry-go-round is that it is the only one in America that still sports its original coat of paint.
The highest sand dunes in the United States are to be found in the vicinity of Alamosa in south-central Colorado. The Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve is a landscape of 46,000 acres of sand dunes that are 8000 feet high. The landscape is believed to have been created more than one million years ago by winds and ocean waters.
