If you’ve been investigating the potential of a job that will allow you to telecommute you may have guessed there would be some possible savings by doing your work from home. I’d like to take a look at a few of the ways you could save money.
To be fair this article is looking at jobs where you are actually on a company payroll, but you are managing that work from home. This article does not deal with other types of work at home jobs.
1) Car. In some cases a two car family could potentially cut their transportation budget in half. They could also reduce their insurance and car taxes as well. The partner working from home may not need a second vehicle (although this will not be universally true). This could erase a few thousand dollars from the family budget in any given year.
2) Gas. This is associated with the previous item. As the price of fuel fluctuates and escalates it is encouraging to know you may not need to pay the excess prices in order to get to work. It can be as simple as walking from the bedroom to your home office.
3) Clothes. You could drastically reduce your clothing budget if you can perform your work in comfortable clothing that costs less and does not change with the season’s latest fashion trends. This could save your family a few hundred dollars every year.
4) Food. Many individuals that work a traditional job will visit a local coffee shop, deli or restaurant as part of their day away from home. A meal at home each day could save you several hundred dollars each year.
5) Daycare. This is a tricky one because you may still need daycare for young children so you can get your work done, but it is possible to reduce the total number of hours your children are away from you, and after school care may not be required. This, too, can save your family a few hundred dollars each year.
You shouldn’t leave thinking you could be the only one saving money with a telecommuting position. The truth is business owners realize an annual savings of approximately $10,000 per employee when they agree to allow them to telecommute. This is of course based on the ability of the worker. If for instance they are not gifted at finishing work on time without a reminder it could actually cost you money to allow them to telecommute.
Many employers are finding that the majority of telecommuters actually work more efficiently and have greater job satisfaction when they are able to take their work home. This is true to a significant degree. Studies indicate that nearly 14 million workers now telecommute.
It may also surprise you to know that some telecommuting jobs have salaries in excess of $100,000.
This type of work at home job is well suited for individuals who don’t want to bear the responsibility of starting a business from scratch, but wish to take their work back to their home environment. They like being tied to a company – they just don’t want to physically relocate to the office every day.
For many businesses and employees telecommuting is a definite win/win proposition.
