Chevrolet has introduced this compact car in the year 2004. The Chevrolet Cavalier and Geo/Chevrolet Prizm which have been running popularly for a long time since the late 1980’s have been ultimately replaced by the Chevrolet Cobalt. General Motors, one of the leading automakers of the world, located in the United States, manufactured Cobalt both as a coupe as well as a sedan. Chevy HHR, Pontiac G5, Astra and Opel Zafira are the other cars which shared the same platform as the Chevrolet Cobalt on GM Delta Platform.
The front suspension of the Cobalt is entirely independent of MacPherson struts. MacPherson strut is a specific type of car suspension where the axis of a telescopic damper is used an upper steering pivot. Different types of engines with varying capacities have been used in the Chevrolet Cobalt. The engines used are 2.0L Turbo I4, 2.0L S/C LSI I4, 2.2L L61 I4, 2.4L LE5 I4 and 2.2L LAP I4.
A non supercharged Cobalt SS was started with in the year 2006. The LS model of the car then became the base model with a 2.4L I4 engine. In 2007, minor changes were made and the engines were made much powerful, though the fuel economy remained the same. New console, new steering wheel and new radio head are the main features that underwent some changes from the previous 2006 model. Better enhanced and stronger 2.4L engine was introduced in 2008 where the two different models of Chevy Cobalt SS started to be known with the names ‘Sport Coupe’ and ‘Sport Sedan’ respectively. A 260 hp turbo charged engine was replaced with the supercharged engine that led Chevrolet range of cars since 2005. Later in the mid 2008’s the fuel economy was also brought a change which has been increased to around 25 mpg and 36 mpg on the city roads and highways respectively. Both the coupe and the sedan were dropped as 2009 arrived along with the 2.4L and 2.2L L61 engines. They were substituted by 2.2L LAP I4 which was more powerful and gave better fuel economy. Exterior color change took place and many new additional features were introduced in the 2009 model of Chevrolet Cobalt. Bluetooth capabilities, reconfigurable performance display etc. are few of the major features.
The performance level was maintained to the user’s expectations and people started well acclaiming the performance of the 2008 Chevy Cobalt. With the help of its five speed manual transmission, the 2008 Cobalt could achieve an acceleration of 0 to 60 mph in just 5.7 seconds. There is also a sports model that comes along with the 2008 Cobalt which consists of a naturally aspirated 171 hp powerful engine.
Therefore the performance level based on the power and torque has been consistently undergoing changes and constantly improving where the current 2008 model showed successful user reviews. This model provides 260 hp of Power along with 260 lb ft of torque. A total of 188,045 Chevy Cobalt cars were sold in the year 2008 alone.
