When it comes to pepper spray, most people assume that all of the available canisters are the same. Sure, they vary in size and shape, but don t most pepper sprays contain the same ingredients? If you re considering pepper spray as your self defense product of choice, it s important to learn the differences between the different pepper spray types so that you can make an informed decision. In addition to the size of the canister, you ll also need to consider the type of spray inside the container.

Most pepper sprays contain a formulation based on oleoresin capsicum, the active ingredient that makes hot peppers so hot. The pepper spray is much hotter than even the hottest peppers. This chemical is suspended in water or oil, which enables it to be sprayed from an aerosol spray can. Most pepper sprays contain a formulation of one to ten percent OC, although some of the most effective Mace sprays contain up to ten or even eighteen percent.

Not all pepper spray formulations come out of the canister in the same way, even if they contain the same percentage of oleoresin capsicum. There are several options when it comes to how the pepper spray is propelled towards the attacker. Know how pepper spray canisters work before choosing a canister. There are three basic types of dispersal methods: fogger, foam, and forced cone. Although the different manners in which the spray is released from the canister may seem trivial, it actually can make a difference in how easily it can be used in a self defense situation.

Forced cone pepper spray releases a fine spray that can usually reach distances of between eight and twelve feet. However, the fine spray is not dispersed across a wide area, so you should be confident in your ability to aim accurately.

Foam is another popular type of pepper spray. It is a thicker spray that will not be as easily blown around by the wind, making it a good choice for outdoor applications. Foam also makes a sticky mess, and in many cases the attacker will try to wipe it away from their face, actually making it more effective.

Fogger style pepper spray is most effective in situations with more than one attacker. It is often recommended that fogger spays are used by spraying the canister from side to side to spread the pepper spray, which comes out in a super fine mist or fog. It does not require such accurate aim, as the pepper spray will spread quickly.

Make sure that you understand how your chosen spray works so that you can develop a strategy for using it in a real life situation. Although you can t practice with real pepper spray, you can have a plan in mind for how you would use it to protect yourself. Even though pepper spray is as easy to use as a can of spray paint, it will be most effective if you understand how the pepper spray will come out of the can when you press the button.
