I love my garage door. That may sound strange, but after years of renting homes without a garage, in an area that is usually freezing and often snowy in the winter, the residential garage is a luxury I relish. The power to get into my car without scraping ice or snow off the glass, open the garage door, and be on my way, is liberating (and time saving). As a bonus, our garage door is insulated with good-quality insulation, which, since the garage door is connected to our home, saves energy in the winter. As deals go, it's a good one.

It didn't take long for me to begin taking the garage door for granted. I use the garage door opener for convenience when I go on a walk or a bike ride - I exit through the garage with the stroller or my bike, which is amazingly convenient, and when I return I push the magic door opener button and park my gear inside. When our garage door opener went on the fritz this winter, I realized just how much I had come to rely on it. To go through the front door, open the garage door with the door opener inside the garage, and then exit again to retrieve stroller or bicycle, is an annoyance. Running out of the garage, ducking under the door and over the safety sensors is a safety hazard. I suppose it's a small price to pay for the free pass on scraping ice off of glass windows in the winter, but I've gotten accustomed to the convenience of a garage door. So I've learned the tricks to make it work.

To open the garage door, I need to be the ideal angle and distance from the garage door opener receptor. Precision. I've learned just the right place in the driveway to push the door opener. I sometimes have to push the door opener a few times before it registers with the garage door and I get the magic door opening I love. We have two door openers and two vehicles, so when I go out on foot or bike, I have to remember to get a garage door opener from one of the cars.

When I get back again, I have to remember to put it back in the vehicle. Running back into the garage with the running car door open is another annoyance. Of course, I could fix this by buying a third garage door opener, which probably run at relatively low prices, but I'm cheap.

I've also learned that if I use the garage door opener multiple times in a short time period, it's likely to stop working temporarily, leaving me stranded outside the door. Again, I'm sure I could remedy this problem by purchasing a new battery for the door opener or looking into some repair options, but instead I try to open the garage with the door opener button on the wall and only close it with the door opener once I'm out.

I know eventually I'll have to look into some more permanent garage/door opener repairs or parts, but for now my garage door and I are making it work. It's a delicate dance!
