Everyone who owns a car should know ways they can save on auto insurance. Auto insurance is like death and taxes, we can't avoid it. All states require some level of auto insurance. But the amount of auto insurance you purchase and the types of insurance you carry can vary dramatically. This is what I've discovered when trying to find ways to save on auto insurance.

The three main types of auto insurance people carry on their car is liability, collision, and comprehensive. If you have to take out a loan for your car, you don't usually have a choice about what type of auto insurance you buy. Lenders require full coverage of auto insurance when you borrow money, because they want to protect their investment (the car). States usually require some level of liability auto insurance only. Liability protects the other party in case of an auto accident that is your fault. Collision protects your losses if you're in an accident and it's your fault. Comprehensive covers damage caused by mother nature, theft, fire, etc.

Before you buy auto insurance, be sure to consider all factors, including the type of car you drive, your driving record, the amount you're willing to pay for insurance, etc. You want to be covered properly by auto insurance, but there's no reason to buy more insurance than you need, especially when trying to save on auto insurance. If you are financing your car, you don't have a choice but to purchase full insurance coverage. One way you CAN still save is to raise your deductible on your insurance. This can save you a tremendous amount of money on auto insurance.

Take a look at your car. Is it older or not worth much? Are you a good driver? If so, you may want to weigh the value of the car against whether you want to purchase other insurance than just liability. Your car may not be worth repairing if you are in an accident and you may be willing to take that risk. Many people carry only liability on older cars and it saves them hundreds on auto insurance premiums.
