Belize has recently become one of the most popular cruise vacation ports in the Western Caribbean for cruisers. In fact, its so trendy, even cruises out of New Orleans are now making routine stops in this relatively new port. Belize City, which is the official port is certainly not the tropical oasis that many islands in the Caribbean are, in actuality Belize looks and feels quite third world in nature. This can be a bit frightening for new cruisers and many come home saying they will never go back. That's really unfortunate though because once you really start exploring both the inner rain forest and cays of Belize, it really does become one of the terrific cruise ports in the Western Caribbean.
That's not to say these naysayers don't have a point though. Belize City itself really doesn't feel all that trustworthy. Because of that Belize is one destination where cruisers really want to book an excursion to get the most out of the country. Whether you like adventure or relaxing on the beach, there is an amazing excursion waiting for you in Belize. Some excursions like the island beach days and snorkeling trips pick you up beside the ship and you never even set foot inside the city. Here are the most recommended excursions for you to consider next time you find yourself in Belize.
At the top of everyone's favorite Belize excursion list has to be cave tubing. After meeting your tour guide in Belize City you ride about an hour outside the city to a river system located in a lush tropical rain forest. From there you will have a small 30 minute hike to where you will put your tube in thewater and enjoy about an hour or so float down river through two or three amazing cave systems. The number of cave systems depends on who you book your excursion with and how much time you have before the cruise sets sail. There are many excellent tour operators charging must less than the cruise excursions so look around for a good deal.
If floating down a river isn't your thing you can try one of several Mayan ruins located throughout the country. These temples are some of the most impressive Mayan temples around and they are some of the only ruins that actually allow you to climb to the top of the pyramids. That alone is worth the price of theexcursion. Note, these are more often than not all day excursions. Because of that, your safest bet is to book your excurions with the cruise line so you don't miss the ship.
If you are still concerned about heading into Belize City, try taking a beach break or snorkeling excursion through the cruise line. These excursions will pick you up in a boat alongside your ship and you will never have to venture into Belize City. Instead, you are taken away to a lush secluded island where you can mellow out and relax with a few pina coladas before heading back to the cruise ship.
