One morning I woke up to a terrible pain in the back of my mouth. I went to the dentist immediately, and when he took a look at my teeth, he informed me that I had some problems with one of my wisdom teeth. He said I needed to have wisdom tooth extraction immediately. I felt guilty and regretful because my dentist had been telling me for about two years that I should seriously look into having wisdom tooth extraction. I waited far too long to get wisdom tooth extraction, and now I had to deal with the ugly consequences of not getting wisdom tooth extraction before it was too late.

My dentist had told me to have a consultation with a wisdom tooth extraction specialist, like an oral surgeon, as soon as I could, because the longer a person waits to have wisdom tooth extraction, the greater the risk of problems with the wisdom teeth such as dry socket and impacted wisdom teeth. In fact, over the age of 25, the risk of getting dry socket in the wisdom teeth if you do not have wisdom tooth extraction multiplies exponentially. I definitely should have listened to my oral surgeon and just had the wisdom tooth extraction done instead of putting it off. Now I was suffering from an impacted wisdom tooth and the pain was incredibly great. I was lucky, though, that I had avoided any other wisdom tooth problems and had only gotten one impacted wisdom tooth.

As soon as my dentist told me I'd need immediate wisdom tooth extraction, I rushed over to the oral surgeon office with a note from my dentist explaining why I needed wisdom tooth extraction. The oral surgeon began to explain the wisdom tooth extraction procedure to me and asked me what kind of anesthetic I preferred during the wisdom tooth extraction. I was a little queasy about being awake for the wisdom tooth extraction surgery so I chose to have a general anesthetic so that I would be unconscious for the wisdom tooth extraction. So they knocked me out and began the wisdom tooth extraction.

When I woke up from the wisdom tooth extraction surgery, I felt groggy and incoherent. A few hours later I felt back to normal and was trying to just relax to give my wisdom tooth extraction site a chance to heal. My oral surgeon had given me a list of things that I needed to do after the wisdom tooth extraction to ensure that I had a speedy and uneventful recovery. One thing that I needed to do was to avoid drinking out of straws. This would cause dry socket, which was a condition I did not want. Another thing I needed to do after my wisdom tooth extraction surgery was to take antibiotics to avoid getting any infections at the wisdom tooth extraction site.

My oral surgeon had gone ahead and taken out all of my wisdom teeth during the wisdom tooth extraction surgery so that I would not have to go through wisdom tooth extraction again. From now on, I am going to be an advocate for getting wisdom tooth extraction as early in life as you can, so that you don't have to go through the pain, misery, and regret that I did that morning!
