Suffering from cracked heels? Cracked heels can be a real pain in the foot, but cracked heels can be healed! Depending on how bad your cracked heels are, it may take quite a bit of time. Badly cracked heels might even require a visit to a Dr. But often it only takes a few simple steps to fix a case of cracked heels. Keep reading for more info.

Cracked heels start with dry skin. So the first line of defense in preventing cracked heels is to prevent dry skin. Several things can be done to prevent dry skin, including moving to a location with higher humidity. Ok, that's a joke, since most people aren't going to uproot their lives just to fix their cracked heels. But it would make a difference if you love to walk bare foot and you currently live in a dry climate. It's all a matter of moisture.

A simpler method to prevent cracked heels is to keep them moist. Wearing shoes can make a big difference, as the skin is not as exposed to dry air when it is covered with a shoe. Wearing socks or stockings in your shoes will be an even bigger improvement, as the fabric will cover the skin on your heels more closely. Wearing socks will also allow any moisturizer or cream that you put on your feet to stay in place longer, and work more deeply into the skin of your heels.

If you don't want to wear shoes or socks during the day, you can wear socks in bed to ensure that your heels stay moist during the night. Apply a cream to your cracked heels just before bed and then put your socks on. This will keep the cream against your skin all night long, and help to heal the dry skin. Depending on how bad your cracked heels are, it may take weeks to make real progress in this process. Remember that the problem did not get this way overnight, so it can take just as long, or sometimes longer to fixed the cracked heels.

If the problem persists, you may want to see a Dr. A Dr can safely do some procedures to help speed up the process. One of these procedures would be to shave the callous that is preventing the cream from being effective. Cracked heels are the result of dry skin building up to such an extent that a crack can form in the calloused, dry skin. A callous is actually dead skin, which does not transport moisture. So, having a Dr reduce the size of the callous by removing some dead skin will reduce the thickness that the moisturizing cream has to go to get to living skin. And it is the living skin that is helped by the moisture, which prevents it from turning in to dead, dry skin.

So, cracked heels just take a little attention. Drink plenty of water as well, since your skins needs moisture from the inside as well as outside.
